Welcome to Kate Macaulay Counselling

About Me

Finding the right therapist for you is a very personal and important decision, since the relationship between you and your therapist is a key factor in the success of counselling. My name is Kate Macaulay and I’m a qualified psychodynamic counsellor and a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) working in my own room in Malvern and also online. I am regularly supervised, fully insured and have an enhanced DBS check for working with vulnerable adults.

My core training is a diploma in psychodynamic counselling. This in depth three year training in the psychodynamic model provides the basis of my counselling work. Since qualifying, I have taken extensive further trainings, qualifying as an EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) practitioner accredited by EFT International and also a year long certificate training in somatic informed trauma therapy with the Bedfordshire Centre for Therapeutic Studies. Both of these further trainings emphasise the mind-body link and offer highly effective therapeutic tools that work very well with talking therapy. I’ve found that particularly in trauma work, progress is made by helping clients to stabilise their physical reactions to triggers and regulate their emotional states. This helps clients to safely process trauma without being overwhelmed by it.

Counselling

People come into counselling for all sorts of reasons. You might be finding it difficult to come to terms with a bereavement, struggling with social anxiety or feeling overwhelmed by life and wondering why others don’t seem to have the same difficulties as you. You might find yourself in relationships or situations that you find hard to navigate or you feel like you don’t fit in or you’re trying to make a decision and feel unsure about your next step. Maybe things seem Okay but you find yourself feeling anxious or low and you’re not sure why.

Wherever you are is where we’ll start to work together to look at what is going on for you and think about how you’d like things to be, even if you’re not too sure about what that might look like. We can explore what is going on for you or what might have impacted you from the past, identify together what you need to help you move through any difficulties. The aim is for you to live a life that is more fulfilling to you. I provide a supportive and non judgmental space for you to talk in and whatever you do bring will be taken seriously.

How I Work

I like to think that at the heart of my practice is what is known as “unconditional positive regard” for you as a unique person with your own individual needs. I try to mould my therapeutic approach to the individual, as one size does not fit all.

My main approach is psychodynamic which recognises that many of the roots of our current difficulties and patterns lie in the past. As we grow up we develop ways of handling our experiences that at the time were the best option for us to protect ourselves from difficult thoughts or feelings. Outside of our awareness, these ways of handling our lives and relationships can become our “go to” way of being the world, long after their usefulness. Such patterns might show up as addictions, confusing thoughts, a feeling of stuckness, anxiety, destructive interpersonal patterns or negative emotions.

I also work using Emotional Freedom Techniques (also known as tapping) and somatic tools such as breathwork. EFT can be tried on any problem including but not limited to anxieties, abuse, addictions, anger, phobias, fears, grief, post traumatic stress, trauma, physical pain, limiting beliefs, shock, stress, self-esteem, illnesses. Other somatic tools can help you to stabilise your emotions and gain greater clarity and confidence in your ability to manage your emotional states. I can offer EFT without counselling, it usually works best for us to agree on three to six initial sessions, with the option to work for longer. For those who prefer to write, we can explore journalling and writing as part of the therapy.

Who I Work With

I work with adults with a wide variety of issues including anxiety, bereavement, autism, self-esteem, low mood, trauma and many others. I have an enhanced DBS certificate and can work with vulnerable adults. I have completed an Open University certificate course on autism and volunteer for an autism charity.

Fees & availability

Each session lasts fifty minutes and takes place in my private therapy room in Malvern or online. Following your inital contact, I offer a fifteen minute introductory phone call to find out more about what you’re looking for and think about how I can help. If we both agree, a one hour no obligation initial session charged at £50 is a chance for you to tell me more about what you’re looking for and for me to talk about how I work and find out about you. This helps you to discuss your reasons for considering therapy and we can think about whether I am the right therapist for you. If we both think counselling with me will help we agree on a time and day for the sessions to begin. There is no limit on the number of sessions, some people only want a few sessions and others think they might want to be in counselling longer term. Initially I offer six weekly sessions at the same time and is charged at £50, payable in advance of each session.

I also offer some reduced fee places .

My location

I work from my private and comfortable room in Malvern, Worcestershire which is easily accessible from Ledbury, Pershore, and Kempsey.
